Los procedimientos judiciales se dividen principalmente en dos categorías: civil y penal. Una acción delictiva es investigada por el estado y emprendida contra una persona, a quien se le imputa una ofensa pública. Las acciones civiles son consideradas generalmente como acciones que no entran en la esfera delictiva. Dichos casos incluyen disputas entre personas, organizaciones o el gobierno; mientras que los casos delictivos tratan sobre acciones que hacen daño a la sociedad.
