Egyptian presidential candidate ban

Ten candidates who had applied to run for the Egyptian presidential election have had their bans upheld in appeals about their disqualification. Three of the candidates, including an ex-secret service chief and the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, were considered front runners for the position.

The election comes in the aftermath of the Egyptian Revolution of 2011-12, which saw the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak in February 2011. The first round of elections will be held on 23 and 24 May, with a run-off between the top two candidates scheduled in June, and the winner will start their term on 1st July.
