U najširem smislu, tekst označava bilo šta što može da se "čita" sa značenjem. Za neke teoretičare, "svet" je "društveni tekst". Iako se čini da termin privileguje pisani tekst (deluje grafocentrično i logocentrično), većina semiotičara smatra "tekst" za sistem znakova (u obliku reči, slika, zvukova i/ili pokreta).
