Aaron Hernandez

An American football player; most recently played tight end for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). Hernandez played college football at the University of Florida where he was an All-American and won a BCS National Championship. He was drafted in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Patriots.

In 2011 Hernandez and fellow tight end teammate Rob Gronkowski set numerous NFL records. Hernandez ranked in the top 5 among tight ends in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. As a tandem they became the first pair of tight ends in NFL history to catch 5 touchdown passes in consecutive seasons with the same team. In 2011 they set NFL records for yardage (2,237), receptions (169), and touchdowns (24).

He signed a five-year contract extension on August 27, 2012 which included a $12.5 million signing bonus, the largest ever given to an NFL tight end. However, Hernandez was released from his contract on June 26, 2013 after he was arrested in connection to the shooting death of Odin Lloyd. Hernandez was charged with first-degree murder and five firearms-related charges. He is now being investigated for other violent instances in both Florida and Massachusetts. If Hernandez is convicted for the murder of Lloyd he faces a maximum possible sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. There is no death sentence in the state of Massachusetts. He is currently being held without bail at the Bristol County Jail.

Many have speculated as to the off-field activities of Hernandez, including gang involvement. The Wall Street Journal reported that prior to being drafted Hernandez scored extremely low on personality tests. "NFL teams found that Aaron Hernandez enjoyed 'living on the edge of acceptable behavior' and cautioned that he could become 'a problem' for his team." "Hernandez...received the lowest possible score, 1 out of 10 in the category of 'social maturity.'" However he scored a perfect 10 out of 10 in Focus, a 9 in both Self-Efficacy and Receptivity to Coaching, 7 in Dedication, and another perfect 10 in Mental Quickness. These last scores, perhaps, explain his on field dominance.
